We walk with communities. We don't walk in front of them.
The Striped Goat Foundation partners with businesses, health workers, and families across Africa to build healthier, more resilient communities, the kind that last long after the ribbon-cutting is over.
We're named after one of Africa's most quietly remarkable animals. The goat asks for very little, gives a great deal, and survives where almost nothing else will. That's the spirit we try to bring to every programme we run: humble, hardy, and rooted in the place it stands.
Every project we run sits at the meeting point of three things: the people we serve, the partners who fund us, and the land we all share. We don't believe in choosing between them. We believe in building something that holds all three at once.
About
Our Story, Why “Striped Goat”
Across Africa, the goat has never been a small thing.
It's currency. It's a wedding gift and a peace offering. It's what a family keeps when the drought comes and the cattle can't. It survives on the scrub other animals turn away from, climbs where other animals can't follow, and asks for almost nothing in return for what it gives, milk, meat, hide, and a kind of quiet, stubborn presence in the homestead.
That's not a bad description of the communities we work in either. Resourceful. Under-recognised. Carrying more value than the world tends to credit them with.
We chose the goat because it isn't glamorous, and neither is the work of real, patient community development. It's slow. It's local. It happens one household, one clinic visit, one relationship at a time. But it's also unshakeably durable, and it thrives in conditions that would break something less rooted.
Values
What We Believe
Dignity first
We don't do hand-outs. We build programmes with communities, not for them, designed around what people actually need, delivered in a way that respects their time, their knowledge, and their right to be asked rather than told.
Partnership, not paternalism
The businesses, funders, and government departments we work with aren't donors writing a cheque and walking away. They're partners at the table from day one, because the best programmes are the ones everyone helped design.
Rooted, not parachuted in
We work through local community health workers, local leadership, and local knowledge. Outsiders can fund a programme. Only the community can sustain one.
Honest, not polished
We report what's working and what isn't. Real impact is messier than a highlight reel, and we'd rather earn trust with honesty than lose it to a good headline.
Built to last
A goat doesn't need much to keep going, but what it has, it uses well. We design every programme the same way: lean, adaptable, and built for the long run rather than a single funding cycle.
Approach
How We Work
A relationship, not a rollout
Most development work starts with a plan and asks the community to fit into it. We start with a conversation. Before a single household is enrolled, we sit down with the community, the local health system, and our partner to understand what's actually needed, not what looks good on a slide. That baseline becomes the foundation for everything we build together.
Community health workers at the centre
Our programmes run on the people who already carry their communities: local health workers who know every street, every household, every story. We invest in their training, their retention, and their standing, because a programme is only as strong as the people delivering it door to door.
Data that serves the community first
We track everything through JAMII, our household data platform, but the numbers exist to serve better care, not just better reporting. If the data shows a programme isn't working for the people in it, we change the programme.
Partners who stay in the room
Corporate partners don't fund from a distance. They're part of the design process, part of the feedback loop, and part of the story we tell, because shared investment builds shared commitment, and that's what makes a programme survive past year one.
Focus Areas
What We Focus On
Health, delivered with dignity
Chronic care, maternal health, HIV and TB support, child nutrition, delivered by community health workers who treat every household visit as a relationship, not a transaction.
Economic resilience
Health and income are tangled together. We support households not just to get well, but to build the financial footing, savings, stable income, small enterprise, that keeps them well.
Community strength
Trust, cohesion, and local leadership are outcomes in their own right. A community that trusts its health system, its local workers, and itself is a community that can weather the next shock, whatever it is.
Sustainability, in every sense
Environmentally: we track and reduce the footprint of our own operations, from logistics to waste. Financially: we build programmes that don't depend on a single funder forever, blending government, corporate, and community resources so the work can outlast any one relationship. Culturally: sustainability also means respecting and reinforcing the community's own systems, rather than replacing them with ours.
Partners
For Our Partners
We know that businesses have their own goals, their own boards, and their own reasons for investing in communities, and we don't think that's something to hide from. We think it's something to build with honestly.
When you partner with us, you get real relationships with real communities, told through real evidence, not a glossy case study assembled after the fact. What that evidence means for your brand, your market, or your ESG reporting is something we're glad to talk through. But it starts with the work being genuinely good for the people it's meant to serve. Everything else follows from that.
